Dear Ones,
I can’t believe we’re almost at the end of October, can you? It’s been getting a little cooler, though, and it’s getting dark earlier and earlier. This coming weekend marks Halloween and Samhain, which is either a time for children to dress up and go trick-or-treating (and for some adults to go to costume parties).
Many neopagans consider Samhain their new year. It’s marked as a time when the veil between this world and the world to come is thin, and we may receive messages from those who have preceded us in death. It’s natural to wonder what the afterlife is like – or even if there is any kind of life after this one.
This is our next Living Question – “What comes next?” – and our next movie matinee on Saturday, Oct. 29th deals with questions of the afterlife, the before life, and life itself. It’s a PG-rated Disney/Pixar film featuring the voices of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey and others, as well as jazz music from Jon Batiste, who you may have seen on Stephen Colbert’s late night show.
Should you want to look for films dealing with questions of the afterlife that are more adult-oriented, here are a few suggestions. All are available from SCLENDS through the Beaufort County Library System, and may be available on various streaming services.
- Defending Your Life (1991), Meryl Streep & Albert Brooks
- Heart and Souls (1993), Robert Downey, Jr., Elizabeth Shue
- The Five People You Meet in Heaven (2004), Jon Voight, Ellen Burstyn
- Tuesdays With Morrie (1999), Jack Lemmon, Hank Azaria
- What Dreams May Come (1998), Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding, Jr.
Keep asking questions, and questioning your answers!
Blessings,
Rev. Lori
